My proposal is to donate a portion of the IIC funds to the Boys & Girls
Club of Logan Square. They serve 80 different schools in the area. One of the
main schools they serve is Schurz High School, which is where some of our
scholars participate in onsite.
I looked into this organization because one of the students at Foreman High
School recommended it to me. This specific organization really helped him and
he spoke very highly about it.
I talked to John Stephan, the club director, and he said the money would be
best put toward the club's Outreach Program. This program goes directly into
the schools in the area and teaches students about gang awareness, conflict
resolution, diversity and provides positive peer helpers.
Another aspect of this program is to provide the students that attend the
club with clothing and winter jackets if they don't have other means to get
them. They also assist the members with money to help pay night school fees
that they may need. The greatest portion of the money though would go toward
field trip fees. They don't ask for much money from the boys and girls that
attend the club, so this would allow the students to experience more positive
experiences in the community.
As John Stephan said, Boys & Girls Clubs are put in "the worst area in
communities by design" and he believes through this program, you can make kids
feel good about themselves and turn them into positive role models in the
community.
In conclusion, I would like to ask that the Boys & Girls Club of Logan
Square receive a portion of the IIC funds to put toward providing positive
experiences for their youth.
